A Body in the Bathhouse
Lindsey Davis based this story (about the barely upwardly mobile, Roman informer, Marcus Didius Falco and his partners) on the recent excavations of a Roman palace near Chichester, in modern England. Falco has acquired two assistants from the patrician family of his wife Helena who accompany the Falco family on their trip to Britain to do the emperor's bidding. While Helena's brothers may not know what kind of dirty work will be expected of them, at least they come along voluntarily. Not so Falco's sister who is abducted for her own good and to keep her from the clutches of one of Falco's former partners. Whether or not this abduction will lead to romantic involvement with another of Falco's former partners remains to be seen. |
