Last of the Amazons, by Steven Pressfield
Titanic director James Cameron optioned Steven Pressfield's Last of the Amazons when it was still in galleys. At a movie, the squeamish viewer can close his eyes and wait for the music to give the all clear; not so the reader of Pressfield's latest epic. Grueling battles mean grueling reading -- without reprieve.
Last of the Amazons disappointed me, but not so badly as it might have had I held preconceived notions about its screenwriter author. I knew only that he wrote historical battle fiction. It was disappointing, however, to see traces of a good story and intriguing social structures relegated to third place behind battles, blood, and style.
My recommendation: Wait to see the movie. It will be action-packed.
