Translate a Sentence of Latin - Hic paries est lateritius

Latin Sentence Analyzed and Explained

By , About.com Guide

Expression: Hic paries est lateritius.

Meaning: This wall is brick.

Notes:

This is a very simple Latin sentence. Perhaps the most interesting grammatical element is that because of the demonstrative hic, even without looking up the noun, paries, you know it's masculine. Paries is clearly a noun, so it is the subject of the singular verb, which makes paries a 3rd declension noun. Hic is nominative, singular, and masculine, so the noun it goes with must be masculine.

There could be a question as to whether lateritius is a predicate nominative or adjective. It is an adjective. The related noun is neuter and would have ended in an "m".

The verb is from the "to be" verb sum.
