Dido

Dido of Carthage is known for cutting up the oxhide (bursa) to surround the territory that would become Carthage. She is probably known best as the queen of Carthage who died for love of Aeneas.

Elysian Fields

The Elysian Fields were a blessed place, located in the Underworld as the home of the dead who were judged worthy.

The Furies

The Furies were avenging spirits. They torture the guilty in Tartarus, in the Underworld and can drive living mortals to madness.

Jupiter

Jupiter is the king of the Roman gods, equivalent of the Greek Zeus. Vergil (Virgil) refers to him as the king of men and gods.

Laocoon tried to persuade his fellow Trojans not to let the giant wooden horse through the gates, but when sea serpents strangled him and his two boys, the Trojans took it as a sign of displeasure from the gods.

Latinus

Latinus is the aged king of the peaceful kingdom of Latium. Latinus awards Aeneas his daughter Lavinia to be his wife, but Latinus' plans for a peaceful transition of power are thwarted, and the locals go to war with the Trojans.

Lavinia

Lavinia is the name of Aeneas' last wife. She is stepmother to Ascanius/Iulus and mother to Aeneas and her one child, Silvius. Aeneas named Lavinium for Lavinia.

Lethe

The waters of the River Lethe in Hades provided oblivion to the shades. In the Aeneid Book VI, Anchises explains to Aeneas that this is part of the process by which souls could be returned to the land of the living.

Misenus

Misenus was a Hector's trumpeter who left Troy with Aeneas. He drowned without Aeneas knowing it. A promontory at the Bay of Naples is supposed to be named for the burial place of Misenus.
