Hawass was born in Damietta, Egypt on May 28, 1947. He received his M.A. and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.

Egyptian president announces new Cabinet, Canadians fly out (from the AP) reported: "Zahi Hawass, was named state minister for antiquities, a new post" on January 31, 2011, as part of President Hosni Mubarak's new cabinet.
Keeping track of whether Zahi Hawass is in or out of office and what exact title he now bears has proven difficult. As of Mid-July 2011, he is no longer a state minister.
