Definition: The Regionaries or Regionary Catalogues are documents thought to have been written in the 4th century A.D. showing the landmarks and other features of the 14 regions into which Augustus divided Rome. The Regionaries consist of two documents, the Curiosum and the Notitia. We do not know why they were written. It has been suggested that they were written for the use of the Urban Prefect or for tax collection. The Regionaries could have been guides to the city of Rome. Storey believes the Regionaries are too scant and badly arranged for that purpose.
