Athene - Greek Goddess Athene

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Athene is closer to the Greek spelling of the goddess' name than the common English spelling of Athena. Athene was the goddess of wisdom who was born fully armed from the head of her father Zeus. She was the goddess of wisdom and crafts and the patron goddess of Athens, but she was also a goddess of war. Athene helped many of the Greek heroes, especially crafty Odysseus. Athene is also known for turning Arachne into a spider. Athene is known by the Romans as the goddess Minerva.
