Looking back at these books, I tried to decide which were my favorites. My favorite of the fiction books was The Last Ember. This choice was fairly easy. The Maya fiction was pretty good, but it is part of a series, while The Last Ember stands alone. Of the non-fiction, the choice is much harder and much more subjective. I learned a lot from many of them, but the one that was the most eye-opening for me was the one whose book cover I selected, Empires of the Silk Road. There were many excellent books here, not the least of which were How Rome Fell, Ancient Epic, and The Poison King, but the material in them was basically familiar.
