Arverni

Definition: The Arverni were a Gallic tribe whom Caesar encountered during his Gallic campaigns of the 50s B.C. Vercingetorix, the famous war chieftain of the Gauls, was an Arvernian. Auvergne is named for the Arverni. The major fortified town of the Arverni was Gergovia, which Vercingetorix successfully defended against the Romans.
