Polyphemus was a one-eyed giant or cyclops, but he was not the same type of cyclops who worked as a blacksmith. Polyphemus and his brothers were sons of Poseidon who lived on an island and herded sheep. Odysseus and his men, leaving Troy after they had burned it down, land on the island of the cyclops and in the cave of Polyphemus who considers them tender morsels. Eventually, Odysseus figures out how to escape, but first he blinds Polyphemus and thereby incurs the wrath of Poseidon.
