By , About.com Guide

Definition: Chopsticks are a Chinese invention from, at the latest, the Zhou Dynasty, since the last king of that dynasty, Sima Qian (c. 145 B.C.), is on record as having used ivory chopsticks. It is believed that during the Shang Dynasty chopsticks were already being used, at least 1000 years before the recorded use of ivory chopsicks. Chopsticks may be made of silver, ivory, bamboo, wood, lacquer, bronze or gold.
