Capernaum

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Capernaum was a town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. It was inhabited from the second century B.C. and was mentioned several times in the Gospels.

Matthew says Jesus made Capernaum his home during his ministry. Fishermen and disciples Peter, Andrew, James, and John also lived in Capernaum. The Jewish historian Josephus spent a night there. In the 4th Century, Egeria visited Capernaum.

Jesus cursed Capernaum (Matthew 11:23; Luke 10:15). The town was later abandoned and then rediscovered, in the 19th century, by Eduard Robinson.
