Sophocles (c. 495 - 406 B.C.) increased the number of actors in Greek tragedy from 2 to 3. This reduced the importance of the chorus. Sophocles broke from Aeschylus' thematically unified trilogies and he invented skenographia (scene painting) which defined the background on stage.
