Dionysus

By , About.com Guide

Dionysus is the Greek god of wine, intoxication, and ecstacy. He is known as the twice-born, since he was born from his father Zeus' thigh after Zeus had rescued the fetus from his dying mother, Semele. Dionysus is usually shown bearded with ivy around his head or staff, which is known as a thyrsus. He is often accompanied by satyrs, maenads, often in procession, or a panther, and may have a cup of wine. He is seen in connection with both high living and death, in marble carved sarcophagi.
