Definition: Apostle comes from the Greek for send forth, like a messenger (see angel). The word apostle has multiple referents. It is used in the Old Testament. It can refer to Jesus, to one of his twelve (dodeka) special disciples, or to their disciples.
The Twelve Apostles are
  1. Simon Peter
  2. Andrew
  3. James
  4. John
  5. Philip
  6. Bartholomew
  7. Thomas (Didymus)
  8. Matthew
  9. James the Younger
  10. Thaddaeus (Judas the brother of James)
  11. Simon the Zealot
  12. Judas Iscariot (afterwards, Matthias)
