Eremite

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: In the early Christian Church, people who retired from society to devote themselves to spirituality were known as eremites. Eremites are also known as hermits (clearly, etymologically related to 'eremite') or anchorites. Eremites were generally also ascetics because they refrained from normal human indulgences.
