Shabtis - Egyptian Statuettes

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Shabtis were Egyptian statuettes that were meant to serve as substitute laborers in the afterlife. They were Mummy-shaped so-called "answerers" because they would respond to a summons to duty in the afterlife. Shabtis were included among the burial provisions starting during the Middle Kingdom (2040-1640 B.C.).
