Elagabalus

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus or Elagabalus (named for the sun-god of the Syrian city of Emesa) was emperor of Rome in the third century and despised for his effeminacy, transvestitism, and bisexuality.

As emperor, Avitus became known by the Latinized version of the name of his Syrian god. Elagabalus also established his god as the principal one of the Roman Empire.
