Carinus - Roman Emperor Carinus

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Carinus (Marcus Aurelius Carinus) was married to Magnia Urbica with whom he may have had a son, Nigrinianus, by the time his father Carus was made emperor of Rome. At the accession of Carus in 282, Carinus was made Caesar, and then in 283 he was made Augustus along with his father. This made Carinus ruler in the West and allowed his father to go East to fight the Persians with Carinus' brother Numerian. When Carus died, Carinus and Numerian became co-emperors, with Carinus, the senior and emperor in the West.
Carinus campaigned in Britain where he won the title Britannicus Maximus.
When Numerian was killed, Sabinus Iulianus in Pannonia revolted, so Carinus had to leave Britain in 285, to head to Verona, where he defeated Iulianus. Then, in July of 285, Carinus led his troops to Moesia to meet Diocletian (who had declared himself emperor in the East following the death of Numerian), in battle at the Margus River. Although the army of Carinus defeated Diolcetian, Carinus was killed by his troops -- possibly by an officer who was angry with Carinus for seducing his wife.

According to 'www.theaterofpompey.com/auditorium/pa-sources/sha-car-19.html' Scriptores Historiae Augustae, the most noteworthy contribution of Carus, Carinus, and Numerian was a series of victory games.
