Otho

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Otho (Marcus Salvius Otho, born on 28 April A. D. 32) was emperor of Rome from mid-January to mid-March in A.D. 69, between the time when he deposed the Emperor Galba and when he took his own life after a military defeat by Vitellius, who was to become the next emperor.

Otho had an affair with Nero's mistress Poppaea Sabina. It may have been as a result of this that he was posted to Lusitania where he became governor in 59.
