Dionysus and Panther in the Domus dell'Ortaglia 2nd C. A.D.

Stefano Bolognini

Pentheus enters looking like any one of his aunts. Pentheus comments that the stranger looks like a horned bull. Pentheus relies on the stranger to groom him. Now that Pentheus is suitably garbed and carrying a thyrsus, the stranger says he admires the way Pentheus has changed his mind. Pentheus inquires about whether he will be abe to uproot the mountain peaks, but is told that that would destroy habitations. Pentheus says he will hide in the trees to spy on the Bacchants. The stranger warns Pentheus not to be caught. Pentheus then asks the stranger, as the only one man enough, to lead him through Thebes to Cithaeron. The stranger says his mother will carry Pentheus back, which Pentheus says sounds luxurious.

Stasimon 4 (977-1023)

The chorus prays for madness for the daughters of Cadmus and for them to use it against the transvestite spy.
