Question: Which (Expert) Book Shows Parallels Between Ancient Rome and the United States?
A reader wrote asking the following question about parallels between Rome and the United States:
"Last year I heard through the grapevine of an author who is an alleged expert on the parallelisms between ancient Rome and the United States, that a very worthwhile (and scholarly) book on the subject was either in the works or already published. Constantly scanning Amazon.com for the past year I have found nothing offered that seems to fit the bill. My question: Do you have any knowledge of such a book? Is there something similar which you would recommend?"
Answer: Here's how I answered his request for a book on the parallels between ancient Rome and the United States.
"I don't know exactly what you are trying to find, but wonder if it might not be How Rome Fell, by Adrian Goldsworthy. If not, see: Makers of Ancient Strategy, edited by Victor Davis Hanson.
You might also find the work you're looking for in the forum thread on the US Compared to Rome, and particularly on this forum page.
If not, please feel free to post your question in that forum thread."
After posting this, I received the following suggestion via email:
"There is a good chance that the book in question, which draws parallels between Rome and the United States, is a book called 'Empires of Trust' by Thomas F. Madden, a history professor at St. Louis University."
This suggestions and any further ones will go in the forum thread I've already linked to twice.
