Definition:
Relegatio is a Roman legal term specifying a particular type of exile. Ovid, the relevant Augustan era Roman poet, is said to have been exiled for a carmen et error (a poem and a mistake); however, as Ovid insists, it wasn't an exile, but a relegatio. In relegatio, the citizen retained his citizenship and could continue with other rights, including the power of the father. Relegatio included banishment, but not confiscation of funds or property.
