Fl.

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Fl. is an abbreviation for the Latin verb floruit 'he flourished'. When writing biographies of ancient people it is often impossible to give exact dates. Sometimes the abbreviation "fl." will be used to show when the person made his or her mark on history, especially when the other important dates, birth and death, are not known.
