Naumachia

Definition: Naumachia were the staged naval battles the Romans put on in the amphtheater or circus. Naumachia could also refer to the site of the naval battles. The people who fought were called Naumachiarii and were generally captives or condemned men. These were watery extravaganzas put on at great expense from the time of Caesar.
