Definition: Charun is an Etruscan god often shown carrying a hammer. Charun is probably related to Charon, the ferryman of Greek mythology who takes the dead across the River Acheron. Charun torments the dead and guards the Underworld. In the Christian era, attributes of Charun appeared in depictions of demons. Charun probably served as the model for Renaissance artist Giotto's Satan and Judas.
