Taurobolium

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The taurobolium or bull sacrifice was associated with the cult of Mithra (Mithras) and the Great Mother Cybele. Over time the ritual associated with the bull sacrifice in Mithraism changed. The taurobolium became a type of purification ritual for the devotee who stood in a pit into which the blood from a freshly slaughtered bull dripped all over him.
