The strategos was a military leader in Athens. The strategoi gradually replaced the archons in importance. The strategoi were part of the reorganization of the tribal system under Cleisthenes
. Each of the ten tribal units was under a strategos. In the 5th century B.C., the strategoi had political as well as military importance with access to the ekklesia (assembly). They were elected officials.
