Culture

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Culture is a very general term referring to aspects of human life. It means different things in connection with different disciplines. The Encyclopedia Britannica says that culture refers to human behavior as well as the materials humans create. Culture is also used to encompass language, art -- visual, performance and literary -- religious ceremonies, as well as even less tangible elements of human social life, like education, customs, and mores. Culture can be divided into social culture, dealing with human interactions and material culture, dealing with concrete manifestations.

The Archaeology Guide defines culture for anthropologists as "the way of life of a group of people, including how they live, what they wear, how they govern themselves, how they deal with the dead, their religious beliefs, etc."
