Calydonian Boar Hunt

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: The Calydonian Boar was sent by an angered and vengeful Artemis to ravage the land of King Oeneus of Calydon. The Calydonian boar ravaged the land, the animals and the people, so the king sought the help of the major Greek heroes of the time: Jason, Theseus, Telamon, Peleus, the Dioscuri, Laertes, Nestor, Meleager, and Atalanta.
Atalanta drew first blood, and then Meleager killed the giant beast, but since Atalanta was a woman, there was resistance to awarding her the pelt of the Calydonian boar. Meleager stood up for her and slew his uncles. Shortly thereafter Meleager was killed, possibly by his own mother.
