Athenian Months - Festival Calendar

By , About.com Guide

Definition: It's hard to convert ancient Greek dates to a modern calendar. Among other problems, each city-state had its own lunisolar calendar of twelve months with an extra month periodically intercalated. In the Athenian calendar, the intercalated month, coming after the annual month named Poseidon, would have been known as second Poseidon. We believe the Greeks alternated between 30- and 29-day months.
