The number in parentheses represents the number of epigrams in the chapter. There are up to ten epigrams in each of the "step-by-step" pages. At the top of the "step-by-step" is a selection of the "parts," so that if there are 77 epigrams, as in the chapter on love, (#1), there are 8 parts that will look like this:
