Parnassus - Mt. Parnassus

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Mount Parnassus is 8061 feet high. It is located near Delphi, in Greece. Mt. Parnassus was sacred to the Dorians, Apollo, and the Corycian nymphs. Roman poets received inspiration from Mt. Parnassus' Castalian spring and considered Mt. Parnassus rather than Mt. Helicon, the home of the Muses.
In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Deucalion, son of Prometheus, and his wife Pyrrha, daughter of Epimetheus, land on Mt. Parnassus at the end of the great flood. From there they seek the advice of the oracle and repopulate the world by throwing the 'bones' of the great mother, i.e., stones behind them.
