Cadmus was a Phoenician prince who was sent off, by his father, along with his mother and brothers to find their missing sister, Europa. Europa had been carried off by Zeus and they didn't succeed in their quest, but in the process, Cadmus founded the city of Thebes and incurred the wrath of Ares, whose dragon he killed. Cadmus married Ares' daughter Harmonia. They appear to have been a happy couple, despite their children and descendants' misfortunes. In the end they were turned into snakes. This picture shows the scene that incurred Ares' wrath:

Cadmus was losing his men to the dragon, so he killed it but it was the dragon or serpent of Ares, and Cadmus suffered as a result. First, however, he sowed the dragon's teeth. They grew quickly into warriors who fought each other down to the final five who helped Cadmus settle Thebes.
