Definition: Almost nothing is known about the man Eutropius, historian of Rome, other than that he served under Emperor Valens and went on the Persian campaign with Emperor Julian.
Eutropius' history of Rome is known as a Breviarium. At the same time another historian, Festus, wrote a Breviarium. The content of the two is not the same.
Writing the Breviarium may have been the purpose of the office of magister memoriae, a position which most have assumed was held by the two men in succession. Festus appears to have falsely accused Eutropius of involvement in an assassination plot. The historian Eutropius survived the charges and may or may not have been the Eutropius who became consul.
