Definition: Bodhi is the name of the specific Ficus religiosa tree under which the Buddha sat when he obtained Bodhi 'enlightenment' at Bodh Gaya, which is located in the modern state of Bihar. Bodhi is a Sanskrit word meaning enlightenment or awakening. Bodhi puts an end to the transmigration cycle. It leads to Nirvana. The related word Bodhisattva means one whose essence is Bodhi.
