Definition:
Born in Emesa, in modern Syria, Julia Maesa was the sister-in-law of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and the grandmother of the Emperor Elagabalus, whom she helped put on the throne. Julia Maesa was made Augusta in 218, and deified posthumously, becoming Diva Maesa Augusta or Diva Iulia Augusta.
Julia Maesa was the older sister of Julia Domna, the wife of Julius Avitus, and the mother of Julia Soaemias (born c. 180) and Julia Mamaea (mother of the Emperor Alexander Severus).
