Germanicus Caesar

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Germanicus Caesar, nephew of Tiberius, and the father of Caligula, was a son of Antonia and Nero Claudius Drusus, and brother of Claudius. Germanicus was born in 15 B.C. Augustus urged Tiberius to adopt Germanicus, which Tiberius did. Tiberius sent him to fight against the Pannonians and Dalmatians. Germanicus returned victorious in A.D. 10. Following the disaster of Varus, Germanicus was sent into Germany where he campaigned until Tiberius summoned him home and assigned him imperium in the East. There he died on October 9, A.D. 19, at Epidaphne near Antioch, suspecting poison. The Roman people were intensely sad when Germanicus died.
Ancient sources on Germanicus: Dio Cassius, Suetonius, and Tacitus.
