Ephesus was an ancient Ionian Greek city renowned for the temple of Artemis. It was one of 12 Ionian cities in a league described by Herodotus as comprised of Miletus, Myus, Priene, Ephesus, Colophon, Lebedus, Teos, Clazomenae, Phocaea, Chios, Erythrae and Samos.
