Miletus was an ancient Ionian Greek city in Caria by the Meander River known for the Milesian school of philosophy. It was one of 12 Ionian cities in a league described by Herodotus as comprised of Miletus, Myus, Priene, Ephesus, Colophon, Lebedus, Teos, Clazomenae, Phocaea, Chios, Erythrae and Samos.
Among the philosophers from Miletus are Thales and Pericles' mistress Aspasia.
