Definition:
Ten heroes of Athens lent their names to the 10 tribes of Athens. An eponymous hero is one whose name has been assigned. Many of the heroes of Athens were also early kings. The last of these early kings was Codrus. Although Athens had more than 10 heroes, the list of eponymous heroes of Athens was fixed at these early ten.
- Erechtheus, an early king of Athens, was the eponymous hero of the 1st tribe of Athens - Erechtheis.
- Aigeus, an early king of Athens and father of Theseus, was the eponymous hero of the 2nd tribe of Athens - Aigeis.
- Pandion, an early king of Athens, was the eponymous hero of the 3d tribe of Athens - Pandionis.
- Leos, the son of Orpheus, was the eponymous hero of the 4th tribe of Athens - Leontis.
- Akamas, the son of Theseus, was the eponymous hero of the 5th tribe of Athens - Akamantis.
- Oineus, the son of Dionysus or Pandion, was the eponymous hero of the 6th tribe of Athens - Oineis.
- Kekrops, an early king of Athens, was the eponymous hero of the 7th tribe of Athens - Kekropis.
- Hippothoon, a hero from Eleusis, was the eponymous hero of the 8th tribe of Athens - Hippothontis.
- Aiax (Ajax), hero of the Trojan War, was the eponymous hero of the 9th tribe of Athens - Aiantis.
- Antiochos, a son of Heracles, was the eponymous hero of the 10th tribe of Athens - Antiochis
