Nitocris Queen of Egypt

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Nitorcris was a queen of Egypt mentioned by Herodotus, Manetho, and the Turin Canon of Kings (written in hieratic on the back of a papyrus). Manetho places her at the end of the 6th Egyptian dynasty, while the Turin Canon places her after Merenra.

Herodotus (1.184ff) says there were two important queens who ruled Babylon. The first was Semiramis. The second was Nitocris, who lived 5 generations later. She worked to defend the city from the Persians, by diverting the Euphrates, making embankments on either side of it, and creating a basin for a lake. She also built a stone bridge across the Euphrates so that people no longer needed to use boats.
