Francesco Hayez (1791–1882) was a Venetian involved in the transition between Neoclassicism and Romanticism in Italian painting.

Odysseus at the Palace of Alcinous

In Odyssey Book VIII, Odysseus, who has been staying at the palace of Nausicaa's father, King Alcinous of the Phaeacians, has not yet revealed his identity. The kingly entertainment includes listening to the bard Demodokos singing of Odysseus' own experiences. This brings tears to Odysseus' eyes.
