Definition: A cippus is usually a rectangular stone pillar. Inscriptions were carved into them. A cippus could be a tombstone, a boundary stone, or other site marker.

Examples:
The Cippus Abellanus, a limestone tablet (1.92 x 0.51 x 0.27 m.), is a boundary stone marking the Roman arbitration of a border dispute between two towns, Nola and Avellino.
