Clipart.com
Definition: Darius I established Persepolis as a capital city in Persia (modern Iran), in the late 6th century B.C. Persepolis served as treasury, residence, and burial site for the kings of the Achaemenid Dynasty. In 331 B.C. Alexander the Great sacked Persepolis and set fire to the palaces. Thousands of administrative texts written in Elamite were thereby preserved. Bas-relief provides us with examples of Achaemenid art.
