Definition: Platonism refers to the philosophy of Plato and philosophies based on it, including Neo-Platonism and Middle Platonism. The philosophy of Plato can be distinguished by the period of Plato's writing (early, middle, and late). Plato's philosophy came out of the Presocratic tradition in which there was a concern for the genesis of things out of nothing and the nature of change. Plato believed in an unchanging and eternal reality that was distinct from the world of perception via the senses.
