In the center of the tablinum floor is a mosaic of actors about to go on stage to perform a satyr play. Although a satyr play isn't a tragedy, this important mosaic is the basis for the name of the house. Edward Bulwer Lytton used the House of the Tragic Poet in his The Last Days of Pompeii.

The House of the Tragic Poet was in Region VI, insula VIII, and faced the Via di Nola.
