Egyptian Pyramids

The step pyramid followed the mastaba as a burial tomb. The first step pyramid was designed by Imhotep in the early 3rd millennium B.C., at Saqqara. Imhotep created the first step pyramid by stacking progressively smaller mastabas on top of one another.
