Altars

By , About.com Guide

Definition: In ancient Greece and Rome altars were used for sacrifices. The altar itself was originally an elevation above the ground made of earth or field stones. They came to be permanent structures made of materials like stone or bone. Altars used for burning the animal sacrifices would be in front of the temple.
