King Oineus, earthly father of Meleager and others, forgot to include Artemis in his sacrifices one year with the result that the goddess was angered. She sent a fierce boar as punishment to the Calydonians. Oineus gathered together those heroes willing to tackle the monster. the list included his son Meleager and the female hero Atalanta who drew first blood. Meleager killed the beast and gave the head to Atalanta as her trophy, but his uncles were irate and thought they should get it if Meleager didn't want it. Fighting ensued, and Meleager killed his uncles.
